Treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurs from a gradual decline in kidney function, usually over a period of many years, and can be caused by a number of different things. In the United States, Diabetes and Hypertension are the two most common reasons for CKD. This decline in function is divided into five different stages, Stage I being the earliest stage and Stage V (End Stage Renal Disease – ESRD) being the most severe form of renal failure. This stage requires patients to be on dialysis or receive a renal transplant in order to stay alive.

When treating CKD, our goal is to find out the reason for the decline in renal function and stop or slow down any further loss of function in the future. This is done through a multifaceted approach, ranging from medications to life style changes.

Caring for patients with CKD is a task that requires intra-disciplinary approach, involving not only physicians but also nutritionist, social workers and most importantly, patients and their families. Educating patients and their families on the disease and its progression is a crucial part of slowing down its progression with a goal of avoiding dialysis.

Dialysis Services

For patients who have been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage V, dialysis becomes a necessity. In this stage, kidneys are no longer able to remove waste from the body or fail to manage fluid, resulting in significant edema (swelling), loss of memory, loss of appetite and extreme weakness.

Our team of experts will provide guidance and education necessary to fully understand the changes that occur with ESRD and treatment options available to our patients at that time. In addition, we provide our patients with educational classes as well as consultations with other specialties in order to assure comfortable and safe transition to dialysis.

Kidney Transplant

According to Fresenius Medical Care, a kidney transplant, also called a renal transplant, is a treatment for kidney failure at stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), also called end stage renal disease (ESRD). A kidney transplant is a major surgery during which a person with kidney failure receives a new kidney—either from a living donor or a deceased donor. A successful kidney transplant is closest to natural kidney function and considered the most effective treatment for ESRD—offering a chance for a longer, healthier life.

This process involves removing a normal functioning kidney from one person and placing it into another. Kidneys can come from deceased or live donors. Many tests must be done to ensure that you can receive a transplant. Transplant is believed to be the treatment option that allows you to have the quality of life you had before kidney failure.  Our experts work very closely with transplant centers in Michigan as well as Ohio to assure the best fit for our patients and their families.
